The inaugral edition of Frieze Masters, the first fair for historical art organised by Frieze, takes place on Gloucester Green in London’s Regent’s Park from 11–14 October 2012. Frieze Masters is sponsored by Deutsche Bank.

Participating Galleries

The participating galleries will exhibit art ranging from the ancient era and old masters through to art of the 20th century. Representing 18 countries, galleries participating in the first edition include: Galerie 1900-2000, Paris; Acquavella Galleries, New York; Colnaghi, London; Gagosian, London/ New York; Elvira Gonzales, Madrid; Daniel Katz, London; Galerie Meyer Oceanic Art, Paris; Moretti Fine Art London/Florence; Helly Nahmad, London; Pace, London/New York; Van de Weghe Fine Art, New York and Rupert Wace, London.

Frieze Masters is a carefully selected presentation of over 90 of the world’s leading galleries, with 79 in the main section and 22 in Spotlight. The fair will give a unique contemporary perspective on art throughout the ages. Coinciding with, and within walking distance of, Frieze London, the two fairs will make London the focus for as broad as possible an international art audience and will benefit from a crossover between audiences of contemporary and historical art.
The Spotlight section is dedicated to solo artist presentations from the 20th century. The selection of galleries in Spotlight has been advised by curator Adriano Pedrosa. It will offer visitors the chance to discover artists working throughout the 20th century, from territories: Austria, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Greece, Lebanon, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, UK and USA.

Architecture

Frieze Masters is designed by New York-based Selldorf Architects who have created a contemporary, elegant environment where ancient and modern art can be shown side by side.

High ceilings, natural light, tall silver birch trees and park benches in the public squares and walkways, will give visitors the sense of being in a park setting. The unique surroundings of Gloucester Green and Regent’s Park will be brought inside through the transparent walls around the cafés and entrances, allowing for a play between interior and exterior space. A refined palette of greys and whites will be employed to not only provide flexibility for the exhibitors’ individual needs and tastes, but also allow a coherent appearance for the fair.

Frieze Masters Talks
Frieze Masters Talks brings together three leading international painters with directors and curators from some of the world’s most renowned museums, exploring the dialogue between art, past and present. Cecily Brown will reveal the thinking behind her reinterpretations of traditional imagery and subject matter with Nicholas Penny (Director, National Gallery, London); Luc Tuymans will give an insight into the decisions he makes in his depictions of significant moments in history with Dominique de Font-Réaulx (Senior Curator, Museé de Louvre, Paris); and Glenn Brown will discuss his appropriation of historical artwork with Bice Curiger (Curator, Kunsthaus Zürich and Editor-in-Chief, Parkett).

Frieze Masters Talks is programmed by Jasper Sharp, (Adjunct Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna).
